The Netherlands renowned Corso Zundert Parade rode beauty upon beauty through the streets of Zundert. Millions of giant dahlia bulbs adorned massive floats inspired by the works and life of Van Gogh – after all, it is the iconic painter’s hometown and the Holland tourism board has declared 2015 the year of Van Gogh.

The Zundert Flower Parade is but one of the many events planned this year to commemorate the region’s 125-year influence of van Gogh.  After a whole year of work and preparations, the parade is celebrated on the first Sunday of September.  The parade dates back to 1936, celebrating the region’s reputation as a global supplier of the dahlia bulb.  Each and every dahlia is individually affixed to the floats, which uses about 400,000 flowers per design.  The art of building the floats has been passed down from generation to generation, each one is designed and built by volunteers, even down to the cultivation of the dahlias.

17th-century Dutch Inspired Wearable Art Worthy of any Art Phene’s Attention

Models walked the runway wearing broken frames and twisted canvas like jilted lovers whose aggression found retribution in the cruelest of ways.

This isn’t some avant-garde Chelsea gathering, but the latest fashion show put on by the courageous fashion duo Viktor&Rolf.

As the models finished their turn on the catwalk Viktor&Rolf stood quiet in the background helping a chosen few out of the exaggerated outfits, rearranging the cracked textile frames and fabrics inspired by 17th-century Dutch Golden Age artwork, and hanging them on the back wall.

Moving works of art are steady features in the duo’s repertoire  – their early 2015 Haute Couture line, Van Gogh Girl was richly influenced by Van Gogh‘s style and vivid depictions of rural countrysides. During that runway show each flower printed A-line babydoll dress increased in color, topped off with ever growing sculptural straw hats.

“Art comes to life in a gallery of surreal proportions,” read the designers’ show notes. “A dress transforms into an artwork, back into a dress and into an artwork again. Poetry becomes reality, morphing back into fantasy.”

Luminous Bike Path gives Gentle Nod to Van Gogh’s Starry Night

Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde’s – known for developing the Netherlands first glow-in-the-dark Smart Highway has designed a new cycle path inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night.

The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Bicycle Path opened yesterday in Nuenen [The Netherlands]. The cycle path is illuminated with swirling patterns, coated with a special paint that uses energy (gathered from near by solar panels) during the day to glow after dark. LEDs curve alongside of the paths turns to generate extra light when the weather doesn’t allow the panels to charge the surface to its full capacity.

Very poetically, the swirling paths that reference the patterns in Starry Night, go right through the Dutch province of Noord Brabant, where the artist was born and raised.
