The KAWS empire has taken one step closer to the moon. On August 25th, the MTV Video Music Awards are going to reveal a little upgrade.
The flag holding, Buzz Aldrin-inspired silhouette of nearly 30 years is receiving a temporary redesign by New York-based artist KAWS. The chrome MTV KAWS trophy is 13-inches tall, and riffing on the original it will present the Companion in a spacesuit, holding a flag with the MTV logo.
MTV president Stephen Friedman says that the new KAWS figure was made special for the Brooklyn broadcast of the VMAs at the Barclay Center – so I guess this is a one shot deal. Brooklyn based KAWS artist, Brian Donnelly will also design a 60-foot-tall inflatable KAWS Moonman for the VMA stage.
You can check a cool 360 view of the KAWS statue here.
It’s nice to see MTV doing something a bit more progressive in the arts arena – it’s been to long.
